Brazilian initiatives
in E-Government are attracting growing international interest. In
research comparing the level of progress in using the Internet in different
countries, for example, Brazil frequently figures among the leaders in
providing E-Government services, even though in other indicators (for
example public access to the Internet) its ranking leaves much to be desired.
Peter Knight will
provide practical insights on the challenges and successes experienced by
Brazil in implementing E-Government applications. He will draw lessons from
his publication, e-gov.br – a próxima revolução brasileira
that brings together, among its authors and contributors, authorities on
Brazilian E-Government. Mr. Knight will discuss how the Brazilian
experience confirms aspects already identified as common elements of
successful programs in other countries such as 1) the fundamental role of
leadership in transforming a vision of E-Government into reality, 2) the
importance of redefining the public sector's attitude toward citizens, 3)
the need for government agencies to break down their “silos” and work
across horizontal and vertical structures, and 4) showcasing best
practices through pilots.
